On my first day of RE in March, I watched as I was astounded by the degree of work we were intending to do. We were intending to go to a village in Vietnam to set up a water filtration system so that the village can have clean, consumable water. It was very impressive to see the planning of service learning of this degree and I was proud to be a part of it.
The workload began coming soon as the ORA Family Day approached. During the days leading up to it, we planned on the products we intended to sell on ORA day, went to Mercy Relief to learn more about the condition in the Village in Vietnam, learn more about Mercy Relief and what it does, and created posters to hang up on day with information on our project. The products we end up deciding to sell were Mercy Relief merchandise including an umbrella and the Mercy Relief Panda. We also sold frisbees, handphone straps and keychains. It was really quite difficult to sell the pandas due to its high, but necessary price, but in the end, almost all of us managed to sell at least one.
In the last session of RE, we watched a presentation of the 01 Scouts Service Learning journey to Cambodia. We listened to Mr Tan's experiences when helping out there, to give us a little bit more insight on the possible conditions we can expect. We also watched a small video clip on a Proctor and Gamble water purifying product where a small satchet of it can make brown, contaminated water to clear and drinkable. I think that product would be very useful for the village in Vietnam, as first temporary step to having clean water.
