28 April 2010- Presentation by Mr Tan

We had a presentation by a teacher, Mr Tan, today who was kind enough to share his and 01 Scout's experience during their trip to Cambodia last year. We were told that the physical and social conditions in Cambodia and Vietnam were very similar. However, Cambodia is drier so we would expect much better conditions in Vietnam during the drought period there. Mr Tan shared with us what he and 01 Scouts did to improve the lives and educational structure of the children there, which was their primary aim why they went there. Other than teaching the children about hygiene, they also provided various resources and had some recreational activities with the children. They also did some general surveying of the area and the living conditions there.

The presentation by Mr Tan was very valuable and useful to both our service and learning as we could apply the lessons that they have created and learnt from their experience as we could apply most of these to our trip there. We could also apply most of the information that they teach into the lesson package that we are planning for the children there. We would just like to say a special thanks to Mr Tan for doing up the presentationn for us. Thank you!

Cheers,
Ahmad

Reflection for ORA

I will describe what happened before and during ORA and then comment on it based on my personal view.

Before ORA

Our group is in charge of putting up the A1-sized poster for our booth at RGS. We invested a lot of time and effort into it despite facing problems such as the ineffecient communication with various partners. After 3 afternoons plus evenings of hardwork, we managed to print the poster on time for the event. Additionally, we recycled one of the past years' poster and used it to include the information about our project. Thanks to Ahmad, the "aritist" in our group, the handmade poster was aesthetically appealing. Also, one of the old boys, Hadi, took his time off to help us design our poster. We really appreciate all these help as we would not have done so much without them.

During ORA 17.04.2010

We were assigned to sell 2 panda bears and 2 umbrellas each. We worked in groups of 2 and went around RGS to promote our products and ask for donations. Although we were not very successful in the sale of panda bears (reflected by the people as overpriced), we managed to get quite a bit of donations. Also, I sold 2 umbrellas. The weather on that day was sunny, which contributed to the people's unwillingness to buy our umbrellas. Moreover, the RIPB competed with us by selling the "Raffles Umbrellas" at the same price.

Summary of ORA 17.04.2010

Products:
1.Panda bear - $30
2.Umbrella - $12
3.Raffles Merchandise (keychains, frisbee, phone dangles) - $5 each, $12 for a set of 3

Profit: ~$800

Personal Opinion

Overall, I feel we did a decent job as we were one of the top earners for the event. Along the way, we have gained some valuable experiences. For example, we learnt to be open when approaching people for donation and face rejections with a positive attitude. However, as a group, we did not perform well in terms of time-planning. For instance, we should have printed the poster at least 1 day in advance. Also, there was a bit of confusion when during the accountancy. I belive that we will definitely improve in our organization in the next event. All in all, I think that this is a unique experience as the feeling of achievement after a successful sale is great. More importantly, this experience will help us for our future endeavours.

On a side note, we are currently waiting for MercyRelief to approve our request letters for donations from various companies. We will do our best to send the letters out with our current resources as soon as possible.

In conclusion, this has been a very meaningful journey so far.
